You already know what SEO is, but how, exactly, should you go about improving your page to ensure that you show up at the top of the search engine result page for a given keyword search?
The first thing that you should do when designing a new SEO campaign is to pick keywords that are relevant to your site and avoid competing with bigger players within your niche. For example, if you are selling computers, the last thing that you want to do is compete with the big-budget marketing teams at Dell or Hewlett Packard by optimizing simply for the word ‘computers’. Instead, you want to target a specific subset in your niche, perhaps ‘custom gaming computers’ or ‘computers in San Diego’, which are known as long-tailed keywords.
The second thing that you want to do is place your selected keywords appropriately on the page to optimize on page factors. Search engine algorithms really like to see your keywords placed in the title, h1, h2, and h3 tags on your page, as well as in the meta description. This will help the search engine quickly determine what a page is about and what searches are the most relevant.
Finally, you need to update your site with unique content on a regular basis. Search engines are looking for a site that not only provides lots of content but also provides tangible value to searchers. Ideally, your site needs to have a decent amount of traffic, and this traffic should stay on your page for several minutes, clicking around and reading multiple articles. Search engines are tracking user behavior and by providing unique content that is high quality and invites users to read more, you will increase your search engine rankings as algorithms have started to prefer pages that have higher quality traffic.
