We received a quote request recently that included an outer envelope measuring 4″ in height by 9″ in width. We suggested to the company that they adjust these numbers a bit to a standard #10 which is 4.125″ in height by 9.5″ in width.
If possible, always go with standard size envelopes because it will save you money.
Reason being, many printers place bulk orders for standard size envelopes and store them for when needed. Placing the orders in bulk means they get them at a lower price which results in YOU getting a lower price.
Custom size envelopes usually have to be created for that particular project…and this obviously comes with a higher price tag.

With standard envelopes also come standard window positions (how far the die-cut window appears on the envelope from left to right, top to bottom). Using standard window positions also eliminates the need for having to have a custom die made, which also can save money. Many printers offer guides with standard sizes for envelopes and dies. For the No. 10 envelopes that you speak of, with no windows, check this pdf for exact dimensions:

Also, this site has an envelope size finder:

Thank you Cynthia — great point about the die.
I’d like to add that the standard window size for a #10 is 1.125″ (h) x 4.5″ (w).
The standard window positioning for a #10 is 7/8″ from the left and 1/2″ from the bottom.
